These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated.

Thomas Paine’s immortal words were never more true than in this second decade of the 21st Century. The erosion of freedoms and taking away the rights of citizens in the United States are forbidden in a document called the Constitution. There must be some citizens of the United States who remember this document, it used to be a beacon of freedom to people from all over the world.

The Constitution is what many thousands of soldiers and civilians fought for and died in the great Civil War of 1860 – 1865 and again later in two World Wars against what was alleged to be oppression, naked aggression and Fascism. It used to be when a soldier enlisted in the Army he or she swore to “uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Why does it seem now that so many members of the military and law-enforcement all across the United States and in the far-flung bases in foreign countries no longer seem able, willing or content to defend the Constitution?
