(First published April, 2005) I like to read the New York Review of Books (NYR). It is one of the most literate of literary papers or newsprint magazines. If you can’t read above the 12th grade level don’t bother, you could be too stupid to understand or, more likely, too lazy to find a good dictionary and actually read something that makes you think. The NYR publishes monthly articles which hit at the myths, lies, fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD) of the politics of both the right and the left in the United States and around the world.
Back in 2005, Bill Moyers’ wrote an article called “Welcome to Doomsday” (full text here) and it is one of the best explanations I have found so far of why Christian Fundamentalism and its nutty, right-wing, followers are so supportive of Israel. I always wondered why these weirdos were so enthusiastic about Israel and the land of what Christian Fundamentalists call “Christ killers”—now I know.
You have to also understand that Bill Moyers is an ordained Baptist Minister from Texas so his “liberal” credentials would seem very left and radical to Christian Fundamentalists.
Here is a small sampling of what Moyers tells us:
“…the delusional is no longer marginal but has come in from the fringe to influence the seats of power.”
The plot of the Rapture—the word never appears in the Bible although some fantasists insist it is the hidden code to the Book of Revelation—is rather simple, if bizarre…Once Israel has occupied the rest of its “biblical lands,” legions of the Antichrist will attack it, triggering a final showdown in the valley of Armageddon. As the Jews who have not been converted are burned the Messiah will return for the Rapture. True believers will be transported to heaven where, seated at the right hand of God, they will watch their political and religious opponents writhe in the misery of plagues—boils, sores, locusts, and frogs—during the several years of tribulation that follow.”
If there are any US citizens out there who still believe in the “real” Santa Claus, the Easter bunny and Snow White, then this is a tale for you. The rest of you should read Moyer’s article and then get out of the madhouse called the US of A, the utopia for the Christian right, as soon as possible because “fat city” is going to be the scene of the new rapture if Christian Fundamentalists have their way.

The Israel Lobby
“For the past several decades, and especially since the Six-Day War in 1967, the centrepiece of US Middle Eastern policy has been its relationship with Israel. The combination of unwavering support for Israel and the related effort to spread ‘democracy’ throughout the region has inflamed Arab and Islamic opinion and jeopardised not only US security but that of much of the rest of the world.”
